Getting Started

What is MeristemLab?

MeristemLab is cloud-based laboratory management software designed specifically for tissue culture and micropropagation operations. It helps labs track cultures with full lineage, manage media recipes and batches, monitor contamination, plan production, and manage inventory — all in one system.

Who is MeristemLab designed for?

MeristemLab is built for any tissue culture lab, from small hobbyist setups to large commercial operations. It suits plant propagation nurseries, forestry clonal programs, conservation labs, research facilities, and agricultural micropropagation operations. The software is fully customisable, so it adapts to your specific workflows regardless of what species you work with.

Do I need technical knowledge to use MeristemLab?

No. MeristemLab is designed for lab professionals, not IT specialists. The interface is straightforward and all customisation — including adding custom fields, changing terminology, and configuring stages — is done through the web interface without any coding.

How do I get started?

You can sign up for a free Hobby tier account to explore the software with up to 50 cultures. No credit card is required. The onboarding process walks you through setting up your organisation, configuring your terminology preferences, and importing existing data if needed.

Can I import my existing data from spreadsheets?

Yes. MeristemLab includes a bulk import feature that accepts CSV files for cultures, mother plants, and other records. This makes it practical to migrate from Excel or Google Sheets without manually re-entering everything.

Features & Functionality

What does culture tracking include?

Culture tracking in MeristemLab includes full lineage and genealogy visualisation, stage progression tracking, health assessments, observation logging, subculture event recording, QR code labelling, and location tracking within your facility. Every culture maintains a complete history from initiation through to disposal or sale.

How does contamination tracking work?

When contamination is detected, you log the incident with details including contamination type (bacterial, fungal, yeast), affected cultures, location in the growth room, media batch used, and the operator who performed the last transfer. MeristemLab then provides pattern analysis tools that help you identify trends — such as seasonal spikes, location-specific issues, or correlations with particular media batches.

Can I manage media recipes and batches?

Yes. You can create and store media recipes with complete ingredient lists and preparation instructions, then track individual batches prepared from those recipes. This includes recording preparation dates, pH readings, sterilisation details, and quality control results. Media batches are linked to the cultures grown on them, so if a problem arises you can trace it back to the media.

Does MeristemLab support QR codes and barcodes?

Yes. You can generate QR codes for cultures, mother plants, locations, and equipment directly within the system. These can be printed as labels and scanned using any smartphone or tablet camera to quickly pull up records. This is particularly useful for updating culture observations at the bench or during transfers in the laminar flow hood.

Can I customise the terminology used in the software?

Absolutely. MeristemLab lets you rename any entity or field to match your lab's language. If you call them "stock plants" instead of "mother plants", or "passages" instead of "subcultures", the entire interface updates to use your preferred terms. You can also add unlimited custom fields to track species-specific data.

Is there production planning functionality?

Yes. MeristemLab includes production scheduling, task management, order tracking, and forecasting tools. You can plan subculture cycles, assign tasks to team members, track orders from customers, and forecast production output based on current culture quantities and expected multiplication rates.

Pricing & Plans

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The Hobby tier is free and includes up to 50 cultures, 10 mother plants, 10 media recipes, and 5 storage locations. It is designed for small operations and hobbyists who want to try digital culture management without any cost.

What are the paid plan options?

MeristemLab offers three paid tiers: Starter ($19/month) for up to 500 cultures and 3 team members, Professional ($49/month) for unlimited cultures and 10 team members, and Business ($99/month) for fully unlimited usage. Annual billing is available at a discount. See the pricing page for full details.

Can I change plans later?

Yes. You can upgrade or downgrade your plan at any time. If you upgrade, the change takes effect immediately. If you downgrade, it takes effect at the end of your current billing period.

Data & Security

Where is my data stored?

MeristemLab uses Supabase (built on PostgreSQL) for data storage, with hosting provided by Vercel. Your data is stored securely in the cloud with encryption at rest and in transit. Row-level security ensures that each organisation's data is completely isolated.

Can I export my data?

Yes. MeristemLab supports CSV, Excel, and PDF exports for cultures, media records, contamination logs, and other data. Your data belongs to you and you can export it at any time.

Is MeristemLab suitable for labs with compliance requirements?

MeristemLab includes a comprehensive audit log that records all changes to records, including who made the change, when, and what was modified. This supports traceability requirements. For labs with specific regulatory needs, custom fields and workflows can be configured to capture required data points.

Technical

Does MeristemLab work on mobile devices?

Yes. MeristemLab is built mobile-first, meaning it works fully on smartphones and tablets as well as desktop computers. This is important for lab work where you need to scan QR codes, update observations, or check records while working at the bench or in the growth room.

Do I need to install anything?

No. MeristemLab is a web application that runs in your browser. There is nothing to install or update — you always have the latest version. It works on Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.

Can multiple team members use it simultaneously?

Yes. MeristemLab is designed for team use with role-based access control. You can invite team members, assign roles with specific permissions, and have multiple people working in the system at the same time. Changes are reflected in real time.

Is there an internet connection required?

Yes, as a cloud-based application, MeristemLab requires an internet connection. This ensures your data is always backed up and accessible from any device. For labs in areas with unreliable internet, we recommend ensuring a stable connection in your office area even if the lab itself has limited connectivity.
